Hi Muriel,

You know my position: unless you go to England every weekend, American is the language to choose and you need a homogeneous language, not a mixture.

- their pronunciation.

Because "there" is not followed by the same categories of words in "their" (adjective or noun), "they're" (adjective, pronoun or noun) and "there" (usually a verb).
Because they confuse between "we're", "were" and "where" which have 3 very different pronunciations in English.

Let's remember a native learns speaking before grammaring.

Hi Muriel,

It depends on regions but as far as I can say: Yes the four "were wear ware aware" are similarly pronounced (as well as the first letter of "aware" which is not the French "a").
On the other hand, I repeat that the former "we're were where" are very different (I insist that the "h" of "where" must be heard).

Grammarly.com publishes these pictures to advertise their Spell Checker, of course "The World's Best Grammar Checker " Wink

Try it: sounds handy.

Their postings and links lead me to YouTube but I don't understand anything.
Oh I have to add some help provided by Grammarly: "Don’t get it? Check out the real Fonzie from Happy Days here,  Mork meets the Fonz (you’ll hear his catchphrase at 4:16)."

Could anyone explain to me what "Mork meets the Fonz" mean? what these AAAA mean?
I got "Fonz" comes after Fonzie, the name of the guy but...  scratch
"Fontzie" displayed on the pic has to do with "Fonzie" and "Font"

Pls!! Thanks!!

Hi Gérard,

I don't know about " Mork meets the Fonz", but for me the different styles of the written "A"s put together in a speech bubble refer to the funny possibility of expressing oneself orally by using different styles of written characters according to what one has to say, as one would speak using different tones or accentuation to emphasize our message.
(The Gothic character does not have the same connotation as the Comic character.
Neither have the grave, serious, furious tones the same connotation as the happy tones.

Am I right ?

I have to explain to you:
- "armpit" might be confused with a pit for arms, hence à kind of hole with lots of cut arms in it (see pic)
- "armpit" is a compound: the hollow part at the top of the arm under the shoulder.

Hi Gérard, everyone
There are a lot of jokes with compound nouns
Where do cars go when it gets hot?
A: To a carpool.
Q: What does the dog catcher give dogs on their birthdays?
A: Poundcake.
Q: Who stands behind home plate waiting for someone to throw him a dog?
A: A dogcatcher.
Q: Why is the bluebird blue?
A: Because the mockingbird is always mocking him.
Q: What do you get if you cross a pit bull with a snowman?
A: A frostbite.
There are plenty more. Have you heard of them ?

English speaking people like to laugh at their language and its paradoxes.

The same jokes (compounds) can be made in French but we are not the best to mock ourselves.

I won't comment on this philosophical thought...
I'll just add that, in American, they prefer "store" to "shop", hence "bookstore" instead of the British "bookshop".
In British En, "store" is used beyond a certain size.

Yes Gérard, an English friend of mine told me that English people like to laugh at themselves until they look completely ridiculous and the more ridiculous the better. It's not typical French is it ?
