My grand children are 6 and 8. Both love Mr Men  and little miss books http://www.penguin.com.au/mrmen/littlemiss.cfm. The story is not too long, the pictures are great, it is funny and I enjoy reading or talking about those stories with them.
You have also lady bird books http://www.ladybird.co.uk/ageandstage/ where you find classical stories and can choose your child life stage. It is very nice and suits younger children. My third grand child is three and completely bilingual.
