English is by far the most widely taught foreign language in virtually all European countries, and often as early as primary school. However, in Great Britain, the teaching of foreign languages in schools has decreased significantly over time. The figures are surprennants.
What natives think about?

To translate
by far ............. de loin
widely ............ largement
taugh .............. enseigné
virtually ........... pratiquement
the figure ......... le chiffre

Hi Florent,

Not exactly in the subject but I didn't know where to post this Very Happy

I heard today that in Australia, French was taught as the foreign language #1 till now; however, it's now replaced by Japanese.

Hi Florent, Gérard !
In recent years there has been an increase in French commercial ventures in Australia which are providing employment opportunities for Australians with a knowledge of the French language.

I heard this information from French TV a few days ago.
Krystyna learned French and confirms the importance of this language.

Here are 2 articles that help understand:

-> Wikipedia - Language education by region
By 2000, the top ten languages enrolled in the final high school year were, in descending order: Japanese, French, German, Chinese, Indonesian, Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Spanish and Arabic
-> The place of the French language and culture in Australia and in the world
French has been taught in Australian schools and universities since the 1880s

Chinese is not taught as much as Japanese due to the long historical contacts between Japan and Australia.
