Re: Dawn French Fan Club 2
An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.
The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.'
The other man said, 'What is the name of the restaurant?'
The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... The one that's red and has thorns.'
'Do you mean a rose?'
'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?

It depends on what you mean with "insane", I would say softer than "insane", rather stupid, idiots...MurielB a écrit:nuts is a slang word for insane
"Nut" also means enthusiast: similar to the French "fou de...".
The plural "nuts" has the same meaning as the singular. In addition, the plural "nuts" means something sexual... of course (as usual or very often)!

Re: Dawn French Fan Club 2
The wise old Mother Superior from county Tipperary was dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her comfortable. They gave her some warm milk to drink, but she refused it.
Then one nun took the glass back to the kitchen. Remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened and poured a generous amount into the warm milk.
Back at Mother Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother Superior drank a little, then a little more. Before they knew it, she had drunk the whole glass down to the last drop.
"Mother", the nuns pleaded, "Please give us some wisdom before you die".
She raised herself up in bed with a pious look on her face and said, "Don't sell that cow".

My comments:
> Mother Superior
A reminiscence of French (weird grammar with an adjective after the noun)?
Hmm, is this story provided by the lobby of Irish whiskey?

Hi Gérard, everyone !
I have another story about the Irish whiskey. Perhaps have i already written it on that forum ? I am not sure. We were crosscountry skiing in the middle of nowhere surrounded by snowy mountains. It was an international ski club and an Irish man was among us. My husband asked him what was the best whiskey. He produced a little bottle and said "It is the one we have in our Pocket" and we all drank that delicious beverage.

Re: Dawn French Fan Club 2
Hi Muriel,
Thanks for this story.
> My husband asked him what was the best whiskey.
Muriel, though you may hear this from natives, it's grammatically incorrect: "what was the best whiskey" is the pattern of a question, the correct one is "what the best whiskey was" (but again, most Brits don't care).
> He produced a little bottle and said "It is the one we have in our Pocket" and we all drank that delicious beverage.
I understand that the brand is not important, whatever the brand, the best whiskey is the one you are holding in your hand and about to drink, right?
I guess your husband knew this and just wanted a good mouthful.
Thanks for this story.

I frawned when I read it and concluded it might be the onomatopoeia ie suddenly, immediately.
