Thanks GérardGerard a écrit:Muriel, the expression refers to the pair of shoes you've in front of you, hence "THE shoes".
I agree that "the" indicates that the shoes are in front of you

Re: Dawn French Fan Club 2
Thanks for your answer,Gérard I understand better nowKinda Claire.
IRL we often have to hesitate between things.
We especially hesitate in stores in front of a beautiful little dress, a new handbag... We hesitate between the pleasure and the money it costs especially when the weather is not that sunny for the dress, the 10s of handbags we already have, etc.
The typical purchase is in front of shoes: not very expensive, bloody beautiful, however we already have tons, we don't have the clothes that fit (yet).
That's because the typical hesitation occurs in front of shoes that there's this expression: "Life is short, Buy the shoes".
Muriel, the expression refers to the pair of shoes you've in front of you, hence "THE shoes".
Claire, it's not exactly that it is important to enjoy life before kicking the bucket (there are other expressions) but close: let's buy the shoes, that's good for the morale.

Not all of them belong to Queen's English (though E II is very good at swearing and using slang words).

Anyone who has ever had a loved one in the hospital will enjoy this:
A woman called a local hospital...
"Hello. Could you connect me to the person who gives information about patients? I'd like to find out if a patient is getting better, doing as expected or getting worse."
The voice on the other end said, "What is the patient's name and room number?"
"Sarah Finkel, room 302."
"I'll connect you with the nursing station..."
"3-A Nursing Station. How can I help you?"
"I'd like to know the condition of Sarah Finkel in room 302."
"Just a moment. Let me look at her records. Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she's had two full meals, her blood pressure is fine, she is to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours
and, if she continues this improvement, Dr. Cohen is going to send her home Tuesday at noon."
The woman said, "What a relief! Oh, that's fantastic... that's wonderful news!"
The nurse said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you are a close family member or a very close friend!"
"Neither! I AM Sarah Finkel in 302! Nobody here tells me anything!"

Gérard i don't understand
I had to search for Righty tighty lefty loosy but I don't understand the whole sentence
I had to search for Righty tighty lefty loosy but I don't understand the whole sentence
Righty tighty lefty loosy refers to threads on a screw, nut, bolt, etc. To tighten, you turn to the right (clockwise). To loosen, you turn toward the left (counter clockwise). A few exceptions exist, notably old propane cylinders and some pipe fittings.
"How do I get this screw out?"
"Righty tighty lefty loosy!"

Re: Dawn French Fan Club 2
A husband went to the sheriff’s department to report
that his wife was missing.
Husband: My wife is missing. She went shopping yesterday and has not come home.
Sergeant: What is her height?
Husband: Gee, I’m not sure. A little over five-feet tall.
Sergeant: Weight?
Husband: Don’t know. Not slim, not really fat.
Sergeant: Color of eyes?
Husband: Never noticed.
Sergeant: Color of hair?
Husband: Changes a couple times a year. Maybe dark brown.
Sergeant: What was she wearing?
Husband: Could have been a skirt or shorts. I don’t remember exactly.
Sergeant: What kind of car did she go in?
Husband: She went in my truck.
Sergeant: What kind of truck was it?
Husband: Brand new 2015 Ford F150 King Ranch 4X4 with eco-boost 5.0L V8 engine special ordered with manual transmission. It has a custom matching white cover for the bed. Custom leather seats and “Bubba” floor mats. Trailering package with gold hitch. DVD with navigation, 21-channel CB radio, six cup holders, and four power outlets. Added special alloy wheels and off-road Michelins. Wife put a small scratch on the drivers door. At this point the husband started choking up.
Sergeant: Don’t worry buddy. We’ll find your truck.

Muriel,
People attracted by such projects don't like feelings and beauty of ramdom aspects as it's too complicated for computers and -so they think- useless.

It is very true !
Expectations are like fine pottery. The harder you hold them, the more likely they are to crack.

Re: Dawn French Fan Club 2
A lady about 8-month pregnant was on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her.
She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved away.
The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst into laughing and she complained to the driver and had the man arrested.
The case came up in court. The judge asked the man (about 20 year old) what he had to say for himself.
"Well, Your Honour, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat under a sweets sign that read 'The Double Mint Twins Are Coming' and I grimmed.
Then she moved and sat under a sign that said: 'Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling,' and I could hardly contain myself.
But, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this accident,' I just lost it.
Case dismissed!
