Kids under 20 don’t have their favourite bands or singers, they don’t care about the stuff they have in their ipods. It is more about creating an atmosphere. For our generation it is the other way round. A tune or a singer brings us immediately into a period of our life. A group of friends now scattered, a forgotten atmosphere, dreams we had long ago. for our parents'generation it was all the more precise.
It is interesting to notice that not only did soldiers know specific songs but also specific recordings here are some american songs during world war 2

American troops had regular access to radio in all but the most difficult combat situations, and not only did soldiers know specific songs, but specific recordings. This gave a nature to American troops music during WWII, not as much songs sung around a fire or while marching, but listened to between combat on Armed Forces Radio.
