At least it is easy to recognize in the parking of your favorite hypermarket !

Hi Ghislaine,
I wonder what the pronunciation is in Dutch (the true one).
- I don't think the En one is good
- the French pronunciation looks too Frenchie...
Regarding pronunciation of proper names:
- Schumacher is said correctly in France but not in the UK
- Bach is not said correctly both in France and the UK.
Yes, provided you also have your microlight (Fr-ULM).Guilaine a écrit:At least it is easy to recognize in the parking of your favorite hypermarket !
I confirm the pronunciation in English (from another source).(I am surprised of the pronunciation of the painter's name in English ...)

Re: Funny Pics / Funny Stories
Wouldn'it be better to pronounce the proper names as they are pronounced in the country of origin ?
Same with the names of the cities : London should be LONDON everywhere.
In Belgium, LILLE is RYSSEL (or Something like that) and so indicated on the sign-posts... Easy, isn ´ it ?

Hi Ghislaine, hi everyone,
He likes France very much and asked for the French nationality.
His name is "Oliver"... can you imagine that they suggested him to change his name to "Olivier", what he refused. Isn't it arrogance?

Hi Gérard,
Very hard to believe, when they accept so many Kevins and the like.... Not to mention all the Ibrahims, Abdels,
Rachidas...
The French names of our old calendar are no more the rule nowadays. Only read the birth announcements in the newspaper, you will be amazed of the choice of some parents. You will probably remember the case of the little Mégane Renault, which was finally accepted after the law-suit.

Hi Gérard, everyone
Very sweet, indeed !
In the same inspiration but on the other way round.
A mother is telliing her little girl off
"If you keep being naughty with me, my hair will turn grey"
"I now understand why grandma 's hair is white" says the little girl.

Hi everyone,
Oh I do love this one
Good backronym, isn't it?
When you don't remember or don't have other good examples, you say etc. don't you? I DO
(from Grammarly with this comment: "Many times you’re better off adding one more example than writing 'etc.'")

Re: Funny Pics / Funny Stories
Hi everyone,
I post this though I don't find it funny at all.
The pic comes from Grammarly with this text: "Grammarly
If you love chemistry and word play--this one’s for you!
Download Grammarly Lite to write without mistakes on Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, Linkedin and more. It's FREE. http://bit.ly/GLite7".
I re-posted it on Facebook but wrote the comment below:
"Was this designed by a lady??
I doubt as that'd claim the aim of a woman is to look like a(n iron) man!!
Ladies are far more and first of all, independent: just themselves."

The "ETC" one is excellent ! I will remember it next time I use it.
As for the second one : "Iron Man" for "female". I was wondering if the chemical symbols were international ? Yes or No ?
Fe stands for "Fer", does it also stand for "Iron" ? No idea...('')

Re: Funny Pics / Funny Stories
Hi Guilaine, hi everyone,
A serious question for "Funny pics" -
So "Fe" is the symbol of iron and the symbol of this element looks like a French word.
On the other hand, "Na" is the symbol of Sodium which doesn't come from English nor French but "Natrium".
The first elements of the table probably come after common names in the language of scientists who descovered/isolated them.
Many symbols/names discovered after the Periodic table was set, usually have the name of scientists such as Curium, Mendelevium...
This table was a wonderful discovery and is very useful for any students in chemistry.

I definitely confirm the "Periodic Table" designed by Dmitri Mendeleev is used worldwide ie the symbols are international.Guilaine a écrit:... I was wondering if the chemical symbols were international ? Yes or No ?

Re: Funny Pics / Funny Stories
Ghislaine,
Chemical elements are roughly composed of electrons turning around a nucleus.
Chemical properties are set by the external electrons.
More specifically electrons are located on different orbits. The various orbits can host a limited number of électrons and these external electrons as well as the electrons that could be added to fill up the last orbit involve chemical properties.
...
In the Periodic table, Mendeleev initially placed the element in columns according to their similarities (chemical properties).
Afterwards (I don't know if Mendeleev realized this), people noticed the columns were linked to what I wrote above (electrons or empty places on the last orbit) so that columns are named "families".

Hi Ghislaine, hi everyone,
I didn't notice I had posted the Periodic table in English.
After Fe which is French and not English, after Sn which is neither Fr nor En...
I finally found an element which is closer to En than Fr: N like Nitrogen (French Azote).

Hi everyone,
Don't get fooled like many Americans
This is not exactly a funny picture. In fact, every item is the contrary of what it states.

C1 - I think there are some people missing the point of this.
C2 - "How to write well"...
C3 - Are you all serious??? READ THEM ALL! It's SUPPOSED to be wrong! "How to write good" is intentionally wrong. Geesh!
C4 - Even funnier are the people correcting the grammar. lol
etc.
