Good idea Muriel!
You subscribed to Vocable. I did in the past but no longer. I don't know if the version I knew looks like the present one.
I guess Vocable is a very good tool to improve English, please could you write a few words about the benefits of this way to make progress?
Thanks!

Hi Gérard
With vocable you can read American and English newspapers in Original Version. It is easy because the difficult words are translated into French. You quickly improve you language skills in that way and it is so interesting to understand the world from Anglo-Saxon view-points. http://www.toutabo.com/abonnement-magazine/culture/langues/abonnement-vocable-anglais?gclid=CIiSofGR7rgCFQTMtAodz14Ajw
I have read Vocable for many years and reached a good level of English. Vocable is constantly improving and the selection of articles is great. Do you know what ?"Vocable" also inspired me to set up various polyglot cafes ?

He aquí el enlace
http://www.toutabo.com/abonnement-magazine/culture/langues/abonnement-vocable-espagnol?gclid=CI6dieXt77gCFbIPtAodW1AAxQ
Sin darse cuenta de ello tu Español mejora mucho.

I understand that Vocable is a useful tool for native French-speakers to help them improve their language skills in English by reading American and English newspapers "in the original" (dans le texte). I'm not a native French-speaker, so I don't feel useful to get "difficult words" translated into French. Anyway, as a professional translator, I've got my own translation tools. Besides, I'm having my regular e-mail contacts and I'm used to surfing every day on all radio frequencies and Internet TV sites to listen to and watch the news and cultural programmes broadcasting from all countries in the world: Youtube, Mike's Radio World, Multilingual Books... offer a tremendous scale of choices. And it's all free! So why should I pay for services I can get free of charge elsewhere?MurielB a écrit:Hi Gérard

Look out! Understanding the world from Anglo-Saxon view-points is not necessarily a better approach than stupidly swallowing anything told by your own national media. Beware of Big Brother! Wherever you go, you are overwhelmed by a load of crap, commercials and ideological brainwash. As a polyglot, you'd better make a mix-and-match, surf the Net and try to form your own opinion about what's really happening in the world.

Ok Henri I understand what you mean. You want to surf the net and form you own opinion.Philippe-Henri a écrit:

But what about sharing ? what about friendship ? It's just "You and the world". A forum is meant to draw people closer to each other because they can compare one another view points, help one another to improve their language skills and become friends which is very nice. You have lots of friends for sure but in the Forum they are your café polyglotte friends which is different because they have the same philosophy as yours. https://www.cafe-polyglotte.com/t461-philosophie-du-cafe-polyglotte
I also understand that "Vocable" is not for you. you are a translator and your English is very good. Vocable just helps those who are not so fluent. Personnally i find it very useful and I learn a lot when I read the difficult words translated into French. Anyway people don't need to use "vocable" to join our conversations (They just click the link to the article and that's it . They buy "Vocable" if they want to make their study easier.
I would be very glad to converse with you about what you think, about what you read. Thank you for joining our forum.

To Muriel
As far as «sharing» and «friendship» is concerned, I correspond by e-mail with friends in different languages and different countries, among which Australia, U.S.A., Holland, Germany, Poland, Urugay and even… France. Thus, it’s not «Me and the world», it’s «We and the world». By and large, we share, the same interests (mainly science, philosophy, sociology, religion, history, geopolitics, law and literature, linguistics, music, visual arts…), although we don’t necessarily share our views on particular topics. Currently, we are discussing the hot item of global warming, CO2 emission, renewable energy, sustainable development and so on.
I too would be glad to converse with you and other people on the Forum about what I read, but apart from you, Gérard and Rémy, there is a very poor response. On the other hand, I should point out − at the risk of disappointing you − that I don’t read newspapers because I don’t give a toss about politics, financial scandals, sport, celebrities, stock exchange, the weather and criminal cases. I only read non-fiction as well as scientific books and magazines for the layman (literature de vulgarisation scientifique).

do you really need lots of responses ? One or two is enough isn't it ? all the more so since they are friendly. I promise to respond when you write something in that forum. Anyway there are lots of visits and people like to read. When you write something interesting people who read it become more intelligent and the whole world improves.

Vocable
I used to read Vocable ( German ) when I was a teenager ( so not really that long ago ) and it was good for me, because at that time, my skills were not that good to read Der Spiegel or other good German paper ( because for me, Bild is like The Sun over here ), so with this help I was able to read more things in German, instead of opening my dictionary thousands times while trying to read Der Spiegel. Now, I can read it without any problem and Vocable was a part of motivation.
But Philippe-Henri has a point, it is easy to reach learning resources ( such as international radios, papers, etc. ) in order to improve language skills. But like tons, Vocable is an alternative for those who might not have internet for example ( even if it's just a few, I suppose ).

Re: sur le forum nous discutons en langue originale sur les articles de vocable: Anglais, Espagnol et Allemand
Thank you Marine for talking about "Vocable". I wanted to let vocable know that we wanted to exchange about their articles. I didn't not want to always use their articles without contacting them. It was also a good way to have more people in café polyglotte sur le net. My secret wish is to have our forum mentioned in their magazine but we have to be patient.
What I find interesting is that everyone can participate in our exchanges. The article link is there in "Let's talk together" and when people don't need to have words translated into French they don't buy vocable, that's all.
Ok there are a lot of learning resources in internet and everywhere else (radios, sites etc. ) Our forum is one of them but it is special : when you regularly write you make less and less mistakes. you can also ask the forum members to point out what they don't like about what you have written and exchange about that (It is not compulsory but it is very interesting)
You build up friendship with the members and you also help to up date a very interesting site. Look at the different indexes and what you can find in it.

Re: Vocable partnership from number 670
I hope your wish will be granted ! With all your hard work ( I always appreciated it and you were so nice when I came to the cafe for the first time ! ), you deserve this good ad.
I do not need Vocable anymore, but sometimes, it might be interesting to buy, because there can be some interesting things and ads for example. But there's not Vocable here, or I'm mistaken. Although, I'd rather write here and exchange with everyone, because it can be fun sometimes and we can learn new things, even if sometimes it does not deal about our language skills. Well, in few words, keep up the good work Muriel, you can be proud of this forum and the polyglot cafe in Calais !

Oh, thank you very much ! But I did not sing great, I think... I hope that if there is such event again, I'll be around at that time.
Everyone was kind with me, I enjoyed speaking with you all, but the adventure isn't over, I'll see you again, sooner or later !
