Sorry, I don't think there's anything serious in zodiac and astrology. The solar system is kept in balance by the Sun itself, its eight planets and their respective satellites. As far as planets and satellites are concerned, they influence one another physically by their position and gravity. These cosmological factors have nothing to do with the character or destiny of individual living beings crawling at the surface of a given planet, e.g. humans that populate Planet Earth. With present-day astrology, terrestrials let themselves dazzled by the assumed mental influence of other planets and their Moon, but it’s all fantasy, poetry and superstition. Actually, it’s utter nonsense and madness. Instead of gazing at other planets and building castles in the air, we’d better prevent our own planet to go to ruin.

A book by Alain Herambourg " Voyants et Charlatans " should be interesting. Does anyone know about it ?
Another book on the subject was written more recently by a lady-visionary who had practised a few years and confessed she had never seen anything. Has anyone heard of her ?

Guilaine courteously joins me in believing there’s nothing serious in zodiac and astrology. She, however, can't help having a look at her zodiac sign. «Out of curiosity», she added. Hm… La curiosité est un vilain défaut.

I sincerely believe we should ban any reference to literature dealing with medieval charlatan practice. It’s all humbug!

I’d encourage people to make fun of astrology. But I won’t encourage them to give in − were it "out of curiosity" − to beliefs that are not worthy of any sort of credibility.

What is important is to be positive. Do you know what a "placebo" is ? it 's a useless medecine but when people think it is good for them it makes them better. it is the same for a lot of things. you have to give people permission to succeed, you have to trust them, Everybody has a look at their zodiac signs. it 's not "out of curiosity" it's just fun. Gérard gave us positive waves because on the whole the prédictions were good for everyone.
personnally I accept everything as long as they are free. I don't like when people take advantage of people's distress to make money.

Hi everyone,

I opened this topic because:
- first I wanted to "teach" the English name of the signs
- then I got the horoscope for 2013 on Facebook (I posted it in September) and I knew it was going to interest many members.

As for me, I never read my horoscope... when a person puts "my sign" under my eyes, I read it but forget half a minute later.
The signs of the zodiac are familiar to everyone.
Whatever the person (believer or not; paying attention or mocking), the horoscope is part of our society (I didn't want to write "culture") and we cannot ignore this.

Muriel compares belief in zodiac signs with medical use of placebos. It sounds acceptable. The difference, however, is that placebos proceed from a medical treatment which helps patients overcome a physical or psychosomatic disease, whereas astrology is downright delusive, it leads people, philosophically, to draw false conclusions.

The danger of zodiac signs, astromancia, horoscopes and what have you is to cast people beyond their «just-for-fun» theory and to falsely make them believe in a «reality» of sorts that doesn’t exist.

I won’t prevent anyone to believe in any truth whatsoever. It’s my personal choice to reject any form of superstition.

Henri I have just written about mental strength. When you think you have good luck, you succeed, you recover, it is in your mind, it is called positive thinking.
The reasons are not scientific (Placebo, zodiac signs nice people round you) but they produce the same good effect on people.

Yes, I understand Muriel's idea of «positive thinking». I believe, however, that we should not lump placebos and zodiac signs (actually horoscopes) together. They may produce the same effect on our mind but there’s a fundamental difference. The use of placebos has proved to be an effective therapy as many diseases are qualified as psychosomatic, whereas horoscopes are sheer fantasy without any rational background.
