Hi Gérard, everyone
I have been bending over backwards listening to the video, it was great but now I have to show you my colours. Some sentences were difficult to understand. I will listen to the text all over again to learn better English and the world will be my oyster. Next time I will point out my difficulties and put up with your critics. I will keep appearances if you say I have a bad command of English. I you are not pleased find somebody to fill in for me
here is a little text to help me memorizing the words I have learnt. I hope you like it

When reading a sentence on these pictures here,
even if it looks simple and obvious,
ask yourself: "would I have said it this way?"
Prepositions are never obvious in any language.
Take note of the "on" after "give up".
So, don't "give up" is not transitive, the sentence won't be "give up to", nor "give up about", nor "give up by"
you would be understood but... labeled as a foreigner.
This "on" is rather common and we must not forget
because we often make mistakes here:
- eg "Congrats on your success"
- eg "Talk on a subject", "Comment on an article"
- eg "I'm on a salary of 25,000 a year"...
Also take note that in the sentence, "difficult" is followed by
the usual infinitive; if it is not new, this will at least confirm you
in your belief.
Remember that France is not the center of the world
and French patterns are not used in every language.
Doubt our patterns, you must check.

Hi Muriel,
> I am not sure what I would have written Gérard. Anyway it is very interesting to know. Thanks
Who wrote this at the end of my own posting?
Is that you Muriel who clicked Edit instead of Respond?
What would you have written?
~~~
I personally didn't know about this "on" after "to give up".
I never met and never needed this "on" after "give up".
Interesting!
~~ edit
As far as I understood, the patterns can be:
- to give sth up
- to give up sth
- to give up on sb/sth
So the sb-somebody complement can only be after a "on" (never without this preposition).
