Gérard a écrit:Maman means love in every language

Yes but it is basic love. the onomatopeia "m" is like "miam miam" and refers to  the oral stage described by Freud. That fusion  between the child and his mother being so important for the child's future life
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_stage

World Languages - - Page 5 175px-Breastfeeding01In Freudian psychoanalysis, the term oral stage denotes the first psychosexual development stage where in the mouth of the infant is his or her primary erogenous zone. Spanning the life period from birth to the age of 21 months, the oral stage is the first of the five Freudian psychosexual development stages: (i) the Oral, (ii) the Anal, (iii) the Phallic, (iv) the Latent, and (v) the Genital. Moreover, because it is the infant’s first human relationship — biological (nutritive) and psychological (emotional) — its duration depends upon the child-rearing mores of the mother’s society. Sociologically, the duration of infantile nursing is determined normatively, because the oral stage is especially important in societies that consider the stomach to be the seat of the emotions, as among some African and south-west Pacific Ocean societies that perceive the oral stage as medicinal.[1]

Hi Muriel,
MurielB a écrit:... the child and his mother...
No, not "his".
Remember English people won't give the precedence to the masculine.
I guess that in the case of a baby or infant, English people would say "its mother" (for older children -> their).

Hi Muriel,

I posted about "pingouin" because they laughed at French language having a completely different word.

Thanks for your comment.
Yes I know the word "Manchot" exists... I guess the Manchot is a specific species.

As far as I know and according to my dictionary, the English word is penguin (Emperor penguin, Royal penguin).

> doen't fly
I guess the penguin of the northern part doesn't fly either, does it?

You are right Gérard the penguin doesn't fly either
http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/penguinsfly.html

Penguins are birds, so they do have wings. However, the wing structures of penguins are evolved for swimming, rather than flying in the traditional sense
