Tacheles in Berlin, Germany
Hello,
I did not know where to put this, but I thought it would suit in this subject.
Few years ago, I have been to a place called Tacheles, in Berlin. Maybe some of you heard about it ? If not, I will be glad to share my discovery.
Tacheles was in central Berlin ( Mitte, on Oranienburg Str. ), but it now has been shut down. It's well known one of the NSDAP quarters and it used to be a nazi prison during WW2. However, it was a showroom for electrical products before that. Then, it was used for Arts ( and even held an arts school in the 50s ).
The building was owned by the municipality. In 1990, artists went to occupy the building as a protest against its demolition, so the building became a squat. And they stayed until 2012, year they got evicted by the authorities, as they wanted to sell the building for a huge sum ( I do not remember the exact sum, I am sorry ).
This building amazed me. It had a bar, downstairs, in a garden. Nobody cared about the garden, it was quite dirty and often muddy as a lot of tourists went through it every day. However, they had nice and cheap beer, friendly waiters, and comfortable seats.
We were able to go in the actual building, and all over the stairs, artists were drawing on it, through the years.
Then, you could go in the rooms and speak with the artists and even buy their creations. I bought a really nice hand made ring, it was really beautiful. I still have it. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of that person.
The arts in this place were from sculptures to paintings, through jewellery and lots of other things. It was beautiful and what made it even better was that you were able to see the artists creating these things.
