Decoding the emotional lives of pigs
When Pigs Cry: Tool Decodes the Emotional Lives of Swine - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
A pig is therefore capable of feeling, it has emotions. I think back to the book by J.R. dos Santos "Ames animales" where the author tackles one of the greatest taboos of our time: the soul of animals. The advances in science and the great ecological challenges are finally becoming clear. According to him Man, animals, the planet: everything is linked. Why be cruel to our animal brothers. Isn't it time we became vegetarians?Decoding the emotions behind those oinks could soon become a little easier. Researchers in Europe have created an algorithm that assesses pigs’ emotional states based on the sound the animals make.
“Animal welfare is nowadays widely accepted to be based not only on the physical health of animals, but also their mental health,” said Elodie Briefer, an associate professor of biology at the University of Copenhagen and an author of the study published this week in the journal Scientific Reports. The sooner a farmer can discern whether an animal is pleased or distressed, the faster any issues in the animal’s environment that may affect its health can be addressed.

Lives of Pigs.
I used to tell the story of a man who was given a heart transplant from a pig. The operation went very well and the patient now has a new job looking for truffles in the South of France.
This was, of course, a joke. However, reality has caught up and recently a human was given a transplant of an organ from a pig. The poor patient unfortunately died a few days later but it shows how much medical science is progressing. johnB.
