How Big Is Seven Billion?
(this text comes from the National Geographic Magazine - March 2011)
Again, this text comes from the N.G. Their language is a model to me.
I typed down the words respecting their writing: contractions, grammar, typography, etc.)
You'll see:
- they don't use the "if conditional then conditional" pattern that's used in Am. spoken language
- the Cap to begin the text b/w brackets
- the full point of the sentence inside the brackets
- the use of kilometers which is the official unit of distance, but also the use of miles which is the unit in use
- there's no "s" at the numbers for "million", "billion" etc.
- a Capital letter at every word in a title
- the "Making sense of a figure so gigantic isn't easy" though I thought it should be "Making sense of so gigantic a figure isn't easy" (prolly British)
- the use of the past instead of the British present perfect
- prolly oodles of points I didn't even see
Again, the N.G. is a model to me.
Don't look to the stars for answers. On the clearest night only a few thousand are visible to the naked eye.
And don't even try counting to seven billion. Even if each number took just a second to say (and you didn't lose your place), getting there would take more than two centuries.
Making sense of a figure so gigantic isn't easy, but with a little digging and a bit of math, the number begins to emerge all around us.
7,000,000,000=?
7 billion text messages - Number sent in the U.S. every 30 hours.
That's about 65,000 every second. No wonder our thumbs are tired.
7 billion steps - would take you around the Earth 133 times*.
Assuming an average step of 2.5 feet, you could also walk the entire Appalachian Trail more than 1,500 times. Yet to be calculated: how many pairs of boots you'd wear out.
* It would be a very long walk.Total distance is 3.3 million miles.
7 billion kilometers - Pluto's maximum distance from the sun.
In case you were wondering, its minimum distance is 4.4 billion kilometers (2.7 billion miles).
7 billion years - Half the age of the universe.
NASA puts the birth of the universe at nearly 14 billion years ago.
7 billion seconds - Age of quahog clam that once held record for longest living animal.
That's about 220 years. If it had hatched in 1791, it would still be alive today.
1791 is when Vermont became a state. And when Mozart died (But it wasn't a clam that killed him.)

Howdy,
A few additional figures and stats about the population on Earth.
NG subscribers received a huge poster (approx. A2 format) with the face of the "average human" according to statistics:
Among the 7 billion people on Earth in 2011
NB- Speaking of American language, notice:
- the way to write 28-year-old: hyphens, no plural to year as it's grammatically considered as an adjective
- no space before "%"

Re: How Big Is Seven Billion?
I wonder if Euro Millions will ever have a prize of 7 billion euros ?
If yes, I will be sure to buy a ticket or two and do the "chicken dance" for luck !

Think of all of the people who would like to kill you...
Think of the guards you'd have to hire!
No, believe me, don't buy a ticket... so that I'm the only one LOL
