The answer may be that "lives" is grammatically correct but "life" is often used so it is acceptable.

As you know, unlike French (we use a singular when the subject is plural and there's only one item per person ("les hommes fumaient leur cigarette"), English uses the plural: "men were smoking their cigarettes" (unless they shared one cigarette ).

NB: We must also remember that it's not well to speak Englsih too correctly LOL at a certain level, we have to learn to make mistakes and speak "street English" (think of a French person always using the perfect of the subjonctive).
