Traditional Happy Birthday Song Lyrics
Happy Birthday to You
Happy Birthday to You
Happy Birthday Dear (name)
Happy Birthday to You.
From good friends and true,
From old friends and new,
May good luck go with you,
And happiness too.
Alternative ending:
How old are you?
How old are you?
How old, How old
How old are you?
What friends sing:
Happy birthday to you
You belong in a zoo
You look like a monkey,
And you smell like one too.

Re: Happy Birthday to You
... Wikipedia...
In Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, immediately after "Happy Birthday" has been sung, it is traditional for one of the guests to enthusiastically lead with "Hip hip..." and then for all of the other guests to join in and say "...hooray!" This is normally repeated three times. This custom goes back to much older songs in Dutch (Lang zal hij/zij leven), German (Hoch soll er/sie leben) and Swedish (Ja, må han/hon leva)
The origins of "Happy Birthday to You" date back to at least the mid-19th century, when two sisters, Patty and Mildred J. Hill, introduced the song "Good Morning to All" to Patty's kindergarten class in Kentucky.

Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Happy Birthday To You!
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Happy Birthday To You!
I want to do something special for you,
It's your birthday, and you're special too.
So I brought some guabs from the outter guab zoo.
They honk (honk) and squak (squak) and sing just for you...
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Happy Birthday To You!
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Happy Birthday To You!
Open your eyes, here's a present.
More crazy creatures; don't worry they're pleasant.
They're upside down weets on inside out swings,
They do things backwords, and backwords they sing...
Yppah Yadhtrib, Yppah Yadhtrib, Yppah Yppah Yadhtrib Ot Ouy!
Which means:
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Happy Birthday To You!
There's a party, a party today.
A once a year occasion!
A party (party), it's comin' your way,
Your birthday celebration!
The grandest present I've saved 'til the end,
'Cause you're the bestest of all of my friends.

Re: Happy Birthday to You

Dear friends,
Hi Gerard!
Many congratulations on your birthday !
Thank you for your latest post. I would like to add following link:
http://gauterdo.com/ref/bb/bon.anniversaire.html
It's an old fashioned song, I must say. However my mother was very pleased to hear it once again as we celebrated her 90th birthday two weeks ago. We all tried to sing it and it was great fun. You can imagine!
We also sang a happy birthday song in German which is well known and which I like very much:
„Wie schön, dass du geboren bist“ von Rolf Zuckowski
http://german.about.com/library/blmus_schoengeboren.htm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbcVZaJOItY
and a Mexican birthday song „las Mañanitas“ which our son-in-law recommended us.

We tried to do our best but ….
Mir hat das deutsche Lied am besten gefallen. Es ist ganz logisch!!!
Do you know „le vivat flamand“ ?
Gute Unterhaltung!

Re: Happy Birthday to You
Thanks very much Odile for all those links and songs that I enjoyed listening.
In my family we follow the Flemish vivat tradition, an ancient Flemish custom of uniting champagne with wedding or birthday celebrations. "vivat" is a term used to wish the couple or host long life and prosperity.
It is traditionally sung at the end of meals, to honour a guest or a couple.
During the song, the honoured person (or couple) sits while 2 people horizontally hold a towel above his (their) head, a 3rd person pouring some champagne on the towel .
There is always the cheeky cousin ready to pour half of the bottle for fun. Never mind if he destroys a beautiful hair set
Nothing is more valuable than that sentence and it is so nice to hear that from your family and relatives.Wie schön, dass du geboren bist“

Re: Happy Birthday to You
Hi Odile,
Thanks a lot for your words and songs that I didn't know.
> It's an old fashioned song, I must say.
As you probably know, I'm pro-American but strangely here, I don't like to read the quoted sentence. I don't like this French song to be forgotten and said "old fashioned" because the melody is beautiful and it deserves to be sung and kept.
I don't think it is necessary that the entire world adopts "Happy birthday to you": diversity is desirable especially with such songs which already gather people whatever their languages (birthdays or any celebrations are never hostile); such songs really are culture: let's keep cultures alive.
