Ten common mistakes made by English learners
LANGUAGELEARNINGBASE.COM

I often post about mistakes xyz by learners... good to repart.

I'm happy to read something about "would like" as I need to tell you about a point I very recently understood.
-1- future tense - 2 auxiliaries: "shall" (at least that's what I learned) & "will" - OK
-2- Conditional tenses - 1 auxiliary: "would"
-3- re conditional, I learned that in British En, a pattern was: "if past, then conditional" eg "if it rained, I'd take my brolly"
-4- a few years ago, I had an argument with several Brits - I was saying that in American English, we could find the pattern "If conditional then conditional"... I was almost sworn with such words as "impossible! forbidden!"; as I was saying that even schoolmasters used the pattern, their response was "such schoolmasters have to go back to school", etc unfortunately for me, this occurred in the morning when Americans were sleeping so that I couldn't get help
-5- at the same period, I asked a question about "will" and an English teacher responded that I must not forget "will" also meant "want"; he said it was the "will of volition" (I liked this word)

What I realized recently is that the Brits often used "if you would like...".
In this clause "would" is not the auxiliary of the conditional but a "would of volition".
That's it! That's what I wanted to say.
cheers
Sorry for having been so long!

Hi Gérard, everyone !
come over is a very good expression and sounds good English. You can also say
Her great-grandparents came over from Ireland in the nineteeth century

It means to travel to a place a long way across the water.

English Words with 'ch' Pronounced /k/, English Words with 'ch' Pronounced 'sh' /ʃ/.

English Words with 'ch' Pronounced /k/, English Words with 'ch' Pronounced 'sh' /ʃ/.
LANGUAGELEARNINGBASE.COM

Very interesting posting!
We learn that the pronunciation of "ch" is "tch" such as in Chad = same pronunciation as the French "Tchad".
However, in oodles of words (coming from the Greek), teh pronunciation is "k" such as in Christ.
However, in many other English words (after French), the pronunciation is "sh" such as in "machine".

I remind you taht in French, we also have 2 pronunciations: "ch" like in "machine" and "k" like in "psychologie" (unfortunately, the French language cheated a bit as many ancient-Greek words are pronounced "ch" such as "hiérarchie, archtecte..."
I would also like to remind you that in French, regarding ch-words, we have a double rooting, I mean 2 series, 2 families of words dating from "langue d'Oï" / "langue d'Oc": chaux/calcaire, château/castel, chair/carne, chien/canidés, chenal/canal, châtrer/castrer, char/carriole, etc.
Many words coming from the French are not listed as it when they are pronounced "k": cat, car, etc. note the "channel" which is one of the rare French words borrowing the "ch-form" (usually it's the "k--form").

"To dismiss" sounds like "démissionner"... yes but it also sounds like "(être) démis (de ses fonctions)".
Yeah. However, the French language is faulty as the two words "démissionner" and "être démis..." don't mean the same.
Don't be mistaken, "to dismiss" means "démettre de ses fonctions/licencier/écarter/exclure/renvoyer/congédier/rejeter..."

Muriel, I don't understand what you mean.
"To be snowed under" means "être couvert de neige".
On a figurative domain, "to be snowed under with work, letters, emails" is "être submergé de travail, de lettres, d'e-mails"...  ah yes I understand now: "être débordé".

~~ edit
The translations of "être débordé" can be "to be overloaded", "to be snowed under (with work)", "to be overwhelmed"...
