Re: Language Learning Base -2-
Gérard I don't know what that means and once again I had to search on the netin a nutshell
This means that you want to describe something / tell a story in brief. You want to give a summary.

Metropolis, City, Town, Village, Hamlet.
Note:
- "city" is sometimes found in the names such as Kansas-City
I guess "city" is not or very rarely used in the UK.
- "town" can also be found as suffixes in names but most of the time under the spelling and pronunciation "-ton" eg Brighton,
- "hamlet" comes from the French "hameau" and is very often found in English names: Birmingham, Nottingham even when the ham became a big city.
What about Northampton? Is there -ham-? "-ton"?
Another word could be added to the list though it doesn't refer to a whole group of houses: "borough" -> suffix -burg after the French "bourg".

Hi Gérard,
Well, I didn't see that one! So, there is still (at least) another one.

I must confess I've to give in!Didier B a écrit:Hi Gérard,
Well, I didn't see that one! So, there is still (at least) another one.
However there're two expressions that baffle me:
- "that's flat"... I wouldn't start a new paragraph with this
- "to say the truth" - I would have thought of "to tell the truth"

Re: Language Learning Base -2-
You are right. That's flat! seems more appropriate to close a conversation than to start a new paragraph.
The typo is "one way of another" which should be "one way or another".

I'm not coming, and that's flat!
If starting a new paragraph it'll be the last one

Just keep in mind -ly is not exactly the mark of adverbs.MurielB a écrit:... Gérard, I can read them but without context it is very difficult to memorize them.
The graphic above was speaking about -ly words that were not adverbs.
There are also adverbs that don't end in -ly eg fast.
