I'm very pleased to have taught you a new verb but you know, there're so many words in English that there's no merit in doing so.MurielB a écrit:... Gérard, to whet is one more verb you have taught me1To sharpen (a knife, for example); hone.
2. To make more keen; stimulate: The frying bacon whetted my appetite.
However, my dictionary says that the 1st meaning you wrote (sharpen a knife or a tool) is archaic, no longer in use - use sharpen instead.
To whet is pronounced the same way as to wet but not quite in American where the "h" can be heard (this difference occurs for most words with "wh" - pronounced "w" in BrEn and "hw" in AmEn).

Re: Language Learning Base -2-
Hi Muriel,
I wrote a bit too fast.
I should have said that not pronouncing perfectly is not a big probem
(the French accent is found sevy by the Brits/Americans;
a foreign accent -American, English, German, Italian, etc- in French is not a big problem)
till we are not understood
or we're misunderstood.
