A gap year is a time off between high school and college. it usually lasts one year but it can be shorter. Today, a gap year can be anywhere, for any length of time, doing anything you want. You can build an orphanage in Belize, teach English as a foreign language in Israel, trek through the Himalayas in Nepal or travel around the 'banana pancake trail' in South East Asia. A gap year is really  whatever you want it to be. Some students say they take a gap year to escape accumulatied stress or to find what really interests them.
In fact it is to step back and have a best view of your future. I do think that those who don't take that opportunity can become narrow-minded or get a very formatted mind
