"Ladies first"still relevant or hopelessly outdated
http://www.vogue.com/873455/ladies-first-still-relevant-or-hopelessly-outdated/
I think that chivalry which is a courteous behaviour from a man towards a woman is not outdated whatsoever. On the contrary it is very nice and makes the world nicer. It doesn't mean that females are an inferior species. It doesn't mean that men have to pay for dinner, carry the cases, that women have inferior wages. it is just a touch of poetry for everyone
What do you think ?
Hi everyoneAmong the many questions I receive on Facebook and Twitter about etiquette, one is from a correspondent who wants to know what is the latest thinking concerning men’s manners toward women? What, he wonders, is the status in this modern age of “Ladies First”? Is it still relevant? Or hopelessly outdated and chauvinistic?

Re: "Ladies first"still relevant or hopelessly outdated
Hi Muriel,
I try my best to slam the door on a lady's face like I do with a man, but I can't
I can't help holding the door for a lady who is at 20 steps behind and I often regret as that lady often doesn't even says thanks nor even provides a single smile (I can understand that ladies don't want to let people think they encourage men to start a conversation due to nowaday's lack of respect)... on the other hand, a lady with a veil gave me a smile and showed me beautiful smiling eyes tho' they looked sad before (she had really beautiful eyes).

Gérard when you hold the door for a lady who doesn't say thank you or even smile, the lady doesn't deserve it. Anyway veiled ladies upset me. It is such a shame to deprive people of liberty for religious reasons. It is all the more important to be nice to them;

Ladies first
Ladies first
I’m not aware that the expression ‘Ladies first’ is not « relevant » or « hopelessly outdated ». The age of chivalry/gallantry is definitely dead, but there is still, in our modern society, a rule called ‘courtesy’, no matter whether facing a woman or a man.
Today, overrespectfulness’ towards a woman shown conspiciously by a man is a form of hypocrisy, not to say contempt or machismo (male chauvinism).
Conversely, a lady will show absolute disrespect by wearing a veil in public.

Hi Henri, hi Gerard !
I think it is important that relationships between a man and a woman should be different from a man and a man or a woman and a woman. Otherwise life would be very monotonous !
Any way a middle of the road position is nice. A flirtatious attitude could make the woman angry. A condescending attitude would make the woman feel inferior but a slightly gentlemanly attitude would make the woman very happy.

Anyway Philippe-Henri I agree that this rule is true for everyone.a rule called ‘courtesy’, no matter whether facing a woman or a man

Ladies first
Certain people who believe that a social man-woman relationship should be less boring than a man-man or a woman-woman relationship are a victim of the concept of feudal chivalry. A sort of flirtation, « courtly love » (amour courtois) as celebrated hypocritically by Middle-Age troubadours.
In our modern society of equal rights before the law, courtesy means a sense of polite citizenship (civisme), independent of sexuality. For me, as a man, there is no reason whatsoever to show more civil or less condescending towards a woman than to a man.
By the way, I hold the door open for any person, whether a man or a woman, walking just behind me, saying « you first »
