Ok it draws people close to one another. I have just read " because of their law knowledge multinational companies don't pay taxes as we do ?" do you think it's fair ?

Muriel,
Companies do what they have to.
Take a look at French politicians nowadays (government as well as MPs), they make decisions or vote laws without preparation, and afterwards they realize that there're drawbacks. They act a bit like I described regarding medecine: nobody checks the results.
"To govern is to anticipate"...

Muriel, you completely changed what I wrote: "Nowise my granddaughter will be a doll" (the opposite of what you quoted).
At least, that looks like what her dad said yesterday: "I don't want my daughter..." (I don't remember the circumstances but he approved what she was doing).

When I say that I don't want her to be a doll, I mean that I (and her parents) don't want to obey us... it's far easier than to say "I want her to be so."

Hi Muriel,
This was published 2 minutes before my last message that means that I was writing and I did see it, sorry!
In my initial post, I mistakenly wrote "nowise" was American. "Nowise" was created in the 14th century (so, nowise Am. ).
Other equivalents in American are: no wise, noway, noways, in British, "no way" or "in no way", in French "en aucune manière", "aucunement", "nullement".
This was published 2 minutes before my last message that means that I was writing and I did see it, sorry!
Nowise is an adverb; it means something like "never" (in my sentence)... but a bit more (never is related to the time, nowise has also something to do with the way, the manner)... the British form would be "in no way" yes I'm happy with this.MurielB a écrit:I forgot to mention "nowise" which is a word I never use and I don't understand

Other equivalents in American are: no wise, noway, noways, in British, "no way" or "in no way", in French "en aucune manière", "en aucun cas", "aucunement", "nullement", depending on the context and the tone: "jamais au grand jamais".

I would like to add that "wise" exists as a noun, an adverb, an adjective, and a suffix.
- (noun) in an old and formal meaning: "façon"
- (adverb) "in no wise"="en aucune façon", "nullement".
Additionally...
- (adjective) the well known "sage", "prudent" but also "pertinent"
- (adj. & informal) "to be wise to sth" means "to be aware of sth", "être au courant de qqc"
- (suffix) I already wrote about this one - two main meanings: "in the direction" like in lengthwise, and "with regard to" like in work-wise
(I usually don't put a hyphen but I'm wondering if I'm right)
An idiom: "A word to the wise:..." = "En tous cas, un conseil..."

Re: Continuous Evolution, again
Hi Muriel, hi everyone,
In fact, I came to this topic because I had something new to publish.
This morning, France Info spoke about "génération Y" (what I call "GenY" or "Gen-Y").
They were referring to a recent article in "Le Monde" dated April 11:
-> Génération Y... Les empêcheurs de travailler en rond
Other related articles:
-> Topsy (Génération Y... Les empêcheurs de travailler en rond -commentaires); this page was opened on Topsy, a social network, to collect comments on the article.
-> Les conséquences de l’arrivée de la génération Y : l’exemple du secteur sanitaire et social this article from the "Cercle des Echos" was published in September 2012.
I didn't read the article nor the other 2 pages but according to France Info, it's said that with GenYs at work, there were a few issues:
- they have no working hours (in both directions: they arrive late, they leave late)
- they want vacations any time... not that they are lazy but they simply make a late decision
- they mainly think of quality of life.
...
Again, I didn't read the articles so, please, add the missing points or your comments.
Above are "bad sides" of GenYs but these guys also have very "good sides"... pls could you write about them.
~~ edit
I'm sorry. There's a glitch re my link to Topsy... it's something weird technicallywise: the forum cannot get it.

Hi everyone,
First of all, other "bad side" points: poor spelling, poor language, less patient (except if they are convinced - in this case, they are able of a better concentration).
GenYs are said to be very quick (prolly due to video games and aliens to kill), they easilly do 2 or more things at the same time.
Can you find anything to add to the "good sides" of a GenY, compared to people at the same age, in the past?

Re: Continuous Evolution, again
Hi everyone,
I hesitated about where to post this message.
In a former "Magazine de la santé" broadcast of the 9th of May, 2 guys were interviewed about a book they wrote: Conversation avec mon grand-père, De la paysannerie à la blogosphère (€5,99 for the digital version).
I liked this interview, I liked this subject and it's in the good location in the "Evolution" thread.
The author is a modern Professional journalist who is connected to the Internet (and Facebook, and Twitter, etc.) all day long. His grandfather is 94 and was a small farmer in Savoy; he liked to exchange with him and got to need to be connected to nature in addition to the Internet.
-> Le magazine de la santé -Le livre go to 12 minutes
I liked! I didn't read the book but I feel that it tells us about evolution between the lives of the grandfather and the author

The results of intelligence tests in different countries show that over the past century average IQ has been increasing at a rate of about 3 points per decades

Re: Continuous Evolution, again
Hi everyone,
it is generally admitted today that the IQ test measures mainly mathematical and philosophical capacities, which is important, but there are other kinds of intelligence, corresponding to the différents topics of human mind activities : for exemple spatial view (artistic capacities), biology, language, introspection, spiritual, social, psychological...and also phantasy, creation capacities...
Anyway, in advanced countries, we are transforming into a knowledge society, whereas in emerging countries they are much more numerous people who go to school. So, obviously, the human intelligence is progressively increasing.

Yes, that's what I was suggesting.

Take care with "intelligence". Better to speak about technical knowledge level.
