Gérard you are right, all the more so since you write American English. I have checked out on the internet. They confirm that the words 'forwards' and "backwards" are still used in Britain. Though it is not sure how much longer it will be around, as more and more of the younger generation seem to pick up their language from TV, and their interests seem to be dominated by the American language.

so Gérard taking what they say on the net as the gospel truth isn't always a good idea ! Anyway if i am only confused about Backward, backwards, forward, forwards, it's not the end of the world !Backward, backwards, forward, forwards are used in the States Muriel.

In AmE, we use them interchangeably. (Although backwards and forwards are less common.) – Peter Shor Mar 30 '13 at 15:03
