I had to look up the word "splinter" in the dictionary
A sharp, slender piece, as of wood, bone, glass, or metal, split or broken off from a main body.

Splinter Fr écharde. esquille, éclat.
Noter que "a splinter group" est un groupe de dissidents, "splinterproof glass" est du verre Sécurit (TM).
Noter aussi que "splint" est une attelle.
Ces mots sont assez voisins, par leur prononciation, de "split".

I like to see splinter / split - to me these words don't have the same root but they're close by the pronunciations and by the meanings.
We sometimes meet such words close-pronunciation-&-meaning in English; is it similar in French? sometimes difficult as the roots can vary due to picking up words from several European languages.
