The Higgs Boson: Searching for the God Particle
Howdy.
Scientific American magazine
Today, two separate teams of physicists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN said they found traces of what could be a mysterious new fundamental particle of nature. One theory suggests that the particle—if real—is a heavier version of the Higgs boson. It wasn't until the LHC was built that anyone could see evidence of the Higgs–and finally in July 2012, they did. This book gathers the best reporting and analysis from Scientific American to explain the theories, the search and the ongoing questions of the Higgs boson.
The Higgs Boson: Searching for the God Particle
As the old adage goes, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Where there is effect, there must be cause. This same logic is applied to the search for the Higgs boson.

Re: The Higgs Boson: Searching for the God Particle
Hi Gérard !
My question might be stupid. I understand that the Higgs Boson is believed to be the particle which gives mass to matter. Why is it nicknamed God particle ?

Hi Muriel,
> Why is it nicknamed God particle ?
Excellent question!
This nickname is due to "The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question?", a book published in 1993 by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon M. Lederman and science writer Dick Teresi.
Lederman explains in the book why he gave the Higgs boson the nickname "The God Particle":

Lederman explains in the book why he gave the Higgs boson the nickname "The God Particle":
The "another book" referred to is "Book of Genesis".This boson is so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to our final understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive, that I have given it a nickname: the God Particle. Why God Particle? Two reasons. One, the publisher wouldn't let us call it the Goddamn Particle, though that might be a more appropriate title, given its villainous nature and the expense it is causing. And two, there is a connection, of sorts, to another book, a much older one...

Re: The Higgs Boson: Searching for the God Particle
Gérard,I have read that at the foundations of physical reality, the nature of material things reveals itself as non-material (quantum physics). So I understand that it is the boson of higgs which gives mass to that non material matter all along the creation doesn't it ? I am probably taking short cuts !The "another book" referred to is "Book of Genesis".
