Re: American English at State
That's right Muriel but Hoover is a brand whih is used as a noun or a verb by some British people (no American - such as Frigidaire in France)... not Queen's En.
The true name of the appliance is a vacuum cleaner, tho' hoover is known.

Re: American English at State
Not exactly I'm afraid, Muriel.MurielB a écrit:Gérard "To wipe the slate clean" means the same doen't it ?
For me,
- "Back to square one" means we start again (Fr "retour à la case Départ"), no need to forget about the experience
- "Wipe the slate clean" rather means that we can forget the experience (Fr "faire table rase, passer l'éponge, faire le ménage"), no need to start again.
There's an idiom stating: "To start again with a clean slate" (Fr "repartir à zéro")... as you can understand, "to start" is not included in "wipe the slate clean"

It's generally much better when you do something "off the cuff" because it sounds much more natural .gerardM a écrit:Have you ever been asked to do something "off the cuff"? How did it go? #AmericanEnglish

Yes but we need a minimum of time or good knowledge to provide a good result.

Re: American English at State
Hi Gérard, all the expressions in American English are super and I wish I could remember them all. Anyway personally I have problems with the different accents. All the different ways of pronouncing the various words are for me still difficult.
