Computer computor

Not exactly I'm afraid Muriel.
A whizz-kid is a "jeune prodige".
A whizz is simply "un as" whatever the age.

Weird, Whizz (or whiz) sounds like wizard, has the same meaning however the words don't have the same spelling.

When you go to a conference, do you ever get a freebie? Admin loves the free pens and notebooks at professional events!

Something interesting:
I often wrote that English speaking people liked to shorten words.
Due to the richness of sounds, English has very short words -1 or 2 syllables-.
When a word is more than 2 syllable long, people shorten it to 2 eg umbrella becomes brolly, handkerchief becomes handky.
In fact people don't want the shortest possible words (1 syllable doesn't provide enough possibilities), they want two syllables and they tend to lengthen 1-syllable words eg a goat becomes a goaty/goatie, a duck becomes a ducky.
... and free becomes freebie Smile
I'll try to ask but it's strange as in French I call this a goodie.

Muriel mean and stingy are not synonyms as they don't belong to the same "level" of language (stingy is informal, mean is not -with this meaning-).
In addition, using a language consists in listening as well as speaking and when you listen to someone you don't choose the words, you have to understand Smile

Muriel, Krystyna confirms that "mean" is not informal, and equivalent to miserly (=avare).

"Stingy" is informal, pejorative (=radin, près de ses sous).

There are other slang expressions such as "tight fisted, tight arsed, short arms and long pockets".

Why this word?
A doughnut is made of pastry (dough) but what is a "nut" doing here??

??

Nut means different things: of course the fruits, part of a bolt that is screwed, in a musical instrument kinda bar on which strings are set, an item used when climbing, mad (informal), enthusiast (informal), head (informal), testicles (slang)

Gérard i have seen on the internet that
"The origin of the name of doughnut is up for debate. Some believe it refers to the nuts that were added to the dough to add flavor. Others believe that the name comes from a recipe where by hazelnuts or walnuts were placed in the center of the cake "
