Muriel, no need to learn, let the music be printed in your brain and ask yoursel: "What did I hear - of to with at...?", just as you do in French.MurielB a écrit:so many prepositions to remember !

Let me add that good at, better at, bad at, brilliant at, clever at, terrible at, skilful at, etc belong to the same family, no?

Re: 1 English idioms
My German teachers often pointed out the fact that synonyms had the same construction grammarwise... similar in English.

Gérard I like these expressions which are more common expressions than English slangs. I feel I can easily use them

Don't forget that when you are able to talk in English on the phone, you are well and truly bilingual !

Gérard, I mean that when you have true conversation with someone on the phone, you have a fluency in the language you are using haven't you ? Talking without seeing a person, without seeing the non verbal signs prove you have a good command of that language. What do you think ?

I think that when I'm speaking, it's fine, when I'm listening, it's way harder.

I agree Gérard, when you are listening on the phone it is very hard and also very stressful because you can't lip read nor see your interlocutor's face signs

Re: 1 English idioms
Of course, you know...
In the "PM" family, 12PM comes before 1PM
ie the order is 12 1 2 3 4 5 6 etc
Another comment:
I very often hear "tonight" with the meaning of "from 6pm".
Another comment:
An American friend was very often using 2p istead of 2pm
Another comment:
There's no space b/w a number and the unit
- in French, we write 50 km
in English, they write 50km
Another comment:
The plural begins beyond 1
One kilometer
One point one kilometers
(in French: 1,1 kilomètre, 1,9 kilomètre, 2 kilomètres)
En speaking people are less respectful of units:
Instead of 10g, they often write 10grs.

Re: 1 English idioms
Important to be able to speak with precision, providing several levels to express the exact meaning you want.
It's important to use the right adjective.
Here, we've 2: normality and much more... as you can guess, there's at least a "much less"-one... and probably others in between.
We have to learn "synonyms", say different adjectives of the same area (at least 5 levels).
Let's not stay illiterate, let's learn precise adjectives.

Are you sure "used up" means tired?MurielB a écrit:Like in French you could also say "I am used up !"
I can't find this meaning; I can see "used up" as Fr-"épuisé" but in the sense of using all of fuel, all of supplies, etc.

I didn't know about drawing a shamrock on a Guiness.
The thingy which brings good luck is named Clover.
There are several words for the French "trèfle":
- the plant is named clover
- the plant providing good luck is the 4-leaf clover
- the symbol of Ireland is shamrock (3 leaves)
- in a card game, it's clubs
