To me there are 2 different languages (after 250 years only).
The biggest differences are in "modern" words (created after the independence) like crops, like car parts, like fuels, like clothes, etc.

Roughly, "old" words have spelling differences, or pronunciation, but also in the meanings; "new" words are very different.

NB: After 950 years, English and French have tons of false cognates.
Unless the Brits adopt American English, the gap between languages will quickly increase.

Instead of "lessons", a French person would have said "a pain".
