Commonly Confused Adjectives with Explanations
▷Many - Much
Although these two quantifiers sound similar, function in a similar manner and mean similar things, they cannot be used interchangeably. Use much with collective nouns and singular nouns. Use many with plural nouns. Here's an example.
Gerald doesn't have much money
Chelsea doesn't have many friends.
▷Few - A Few
A few represents a positive quantity, but it can only be used with countable nouns. The word few represents a negative quantity or shortage. Here's an example.
Julian has a few friends.
Julian has few friends.
▷Little - A little
Like few and a few, the quantifiers little and a little represent negative and positive quantities. Always use a little with non-countable nouns. The word little expresses a diminutive size or a negative quantity. Here are a few examples.
The kitten is little.
Celeste had little interest in history.
There is a little sauce left.
Would you like a little more?
▷Each - Every
Use each with individual or separate items. Use the word every when referring to things in a group or describing the frequency of actions.
The pineapples are $2 each.
Each student received a handout.
Emily goes to the beach every weekend.
▷Wounded - Injured - Hurt
The words wounded, injured and hurt have subtle differences and unique connotations. Victims are injured financially, emotionally or physically. Wounded implies a physical injury or laceration. Hurt describes an experience of physical or emotional pain.
The child screamed louder than a wounded animal.
The injured player was carried off the field.
Buster's owner was relieved that the small dog wasn't hurt.
▷Farther - Further
Farther (root word far) is always used for distance, and further (think furthermore) implies a metaphorical advancement. Here are a few examples.
How much farther is the amusement park?
Further topics will be covered next week.
▷Less - Fewer
Less is compatible with non-countable nouns, collective nouns, volumes and bulk amounts. Fewer is used with countable nouns and individual items. Here are several examples.
Less pollution is better for the environment.
If people threw out fewer bottles, the world would be cleaner.
▷Last - Latter- Latest
Last is the opposite of first, the latter is the antithesis of the former and the latest means the most recent. Here are several examples.
Read the first and last paragraphs today.
Of the two choices, I prefer the latter.
The latest innovations were astounding.
▷High - Tall
Tall is an adjective that measures the size or height of vertical items, such as people and buildings. High is used to define an object's position from the ground, including bridges, planes, shelves and horizontal objects. Here are two examples.
The Statue of Liberty is very tall.
The Golden Gate Bridge is exceptionally high.
▷Sick - Ill
Sick is related to a sickness or physical condition affecting an individual or group. Ill can mean bad, poor, unwell or sick. After the roller coaster ride, Charles felt sick

Verbs often confused [infographic]
❗️ Make or Do
Make: used when a physical object, an action/reaction or a sound/speech is created. It can also refer to food.
“My dad likes to make furniture.”
“Frogs make me laugh.”
“Chickens make clucking noises.”
“Suzie will make dinner.”
Do: used for jobs or activities and can be paired with words like “anything” or “something.” It is also used as generic action, such as “do the dishes” or “do my hair.”
“I need to do housework.”
“Before she can do anything, Betty needs to do her hair.”
❗️ Refuse vs Deny
Refuse: to decline to accept/give; unwillingness.
“The patient refused treatment.”
“I refuse to argue.”
Deny: declaring untruth, disagreement, to withhold or disown something, to reject or contradict.
“Most deny that the sky is orange.”
“He denied taking my cheeseburger.”
“The kids were denied a snack when they broke the lamp.”
❗️ Say vs Tell
Say: a verb usually used without an object. With an object, add “to.”
“Say anything.”
“She knew what to say to her sister.”
Tell: informs or instructs; usually, the person instructed immediately follows.
“Tell your brother to make his bed.”
“Please tell me where my shoes are.”
❗️ Stay or Remain
In most cases, these words are interchangeable.
“Audrey will stay/remain behind.”
“We decided to stay/remain in Peoria another week.”
Both words have also developed unique idiomatic uses.
“When she visits, she will stay with her aunt.” (temporary residence)
“Don’t stay out late.” (away from home)
“Though the team lost, fans remain loyal.” (continue in spite of)
“The crooks remain in custody.” (idiom requires both “remain” and “custody”)
❗️ Sit vs Seat vs Seated
Sit: a verb.
“Find somewhere to sit.”
“Most prefer to sit when they eat.”
Seated: a verb.
Incorrect: “Please wait to be sat.” “The waitress sat them.”
Correct: “Please wait to be seated.” “The waitress seated them.”
Seat: a verb and a noun.
“Please seat yourselves.”
“Please find a seat.”
❗️ Shall or Will
Traditionally, “shall” is coupled in future tense with first person “I” and “we.” “Will” is used for second and third person: you, he, she, they and it. To emphasize conviction, “shall” is used in second and third person, and “will” is used in first person.
“We shall take a walk.”
“He will go home when the movie is over.”
Both are simply action sentences.
“He shall do the dishes before he plays video games.” This shows conviction and says that Mom really wants those dishes done.
“I just bought a new dress; I will go to that dance if I have to crawl there.” The speaker is determined to get to that dance.
Tip: now that you have a headache, here is some encouragement. Some continue to use “shall,” but it is fading from even the most formal writing, and many experts feel it is not dying fast enough. If the shall/will rules have thrown you like a wild horse, use “will;” even if it is wrong according to the traditional rules, it is unlikely that anyone will challenge you.

By the way, I guess that, in France, we sometimes also use "c/o" to send something to someone who is presently at an unusual location (we also say "A l'attention de...", "chez...", "aux bons soins de...") ; do you know what "c/o" stands for?

I've the impression I already saw this on letters but I'm not 100% sure.

Sometimes "make" and "do" can be confusing. We've made a list for you of some words that come after "make" and after "do." For example, you "do your homework" and "make friends." You "do laundry," "make a mess," and "make a mistake." Check out our American English graphic for more!

Hi Gérard !
I like the word "scratch"and I wanted to write more idioms with that word
http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/scratch

1. n. money. I just don’t have the scratch.
2. tv. to eliminate something from a list; to cancel something. We decided to scratch the idea of a new car. The old one will have to do.
3. mod. impromptu; temporary. (see also pickup.) We started a scratch game of basketball, but most of the girls had to leave at dinnertime.

Muriel,

Scratch is an interesting word (noun or verb) with many meanings.

Re idioms:
to scratch a living from the soil tirer une maigre subsistance du sol;
you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours un service en vaut un autre;
scratch a translator and you'll find a writer underneath! dans tout traducteur il y a un écrivain qui sommeille!

I can't find a French expression either.
Here buckets doesn't have anything to d with "kick the bucket" but refers to a quantity of vomit or tears.
In some context, we could use "pleurer comme une madeleine"
