25 things yo never new about the English language
Have a look it's very interesting. Among the 25 things you will be able to hear "a rough-coated dough-faced ploughman strode through the Streets of Scarborough, coughing and hiccoughing thought fully"

Gérard, everyone
I have one question about "To propose". I thought "To propose" was no good for a suggestion for it means "to make an offer of marriage " and it is better to say "to suggest".
Am I right ? The lady should have said "I suggest..."

Re: Internet English Resources - Grammarly.com 2
Hi Muriel,
I understand your question.
Strangely, I had an English teacher who told me the same thing. I trusted this English teacher of French nationality as he had an Irish grandmother (he spent vacations in Ireland, his first name was Patrick), he worked in England for years, he was very good at grammar and helped me improve my English mastery.
As I wrote it, I trusted him till I realized he was neither the Pope nor Shakespeare and though my teacher in 2000, he said silly things at time as the assertion that 2001 would be named -for sure- "twenty-o-one"! My American girlfriend told me he was definitely wrong on this point!
Well, he told me "propose" was used for marriage proposals only:
- Krystyna doesn't agree
- my Hachette-Oxford dictionary doesn't say this at all:
So, let's forget about this supposed specificity of "to propose".
Funny that we heard the same stupidity.

As you can see if we want to speak about marriage, we have to be specific and insert the word "marriage".propose / pr@"p@Uz /
I transitive verb
1 (suggest) proposer [change, course of action, rule, solution]; présenter [motion]; proposer [toast] (to en l'honneur de); to propose doing proposer de faire; to propose that
proposer que (+ subj);
2 (intend) to propose doing ou to do proposer de faire;
3 to propose marriage to sb demander qn en mariage;
4 (nominate) proposer [person] (as comme; for pour).
II intransitive verb faire sa demande en mariage (to à).
III proposed past participle adjective [action, reform] envisagé.
So, let's forget about this supposed specificity of "to propose".
Funny that we heard the same stupidity.

Re: Internet English Resources - Grammarly.com 2
Thanks Gérard for shedding some light on that. I will remember. Somebody told me one day that when you go through an oral interview you should avoid the verb "to Propose" ! Of course even a very good teacher can be wrong from time to time ! there's nothing to be ashamed of. what is important is always striving to improve.

Muriel,
Who gave you this piece of advice? French? British?
I don't know if this specificity of "to propose" is regional but I would like teachers to be reliable otherwise on whom could we count?
This teacher was very good at grammar; on the other hand, I remember 3 big mistakes: "twenty-O-one", "to propose" and "so do I" (according to him, there was only one way to express our "moi aussi").
Another good point to him was that he let me use American vocabulary and pronunciation.

Re: Internet English Resources - Grammarly.com 2
Gérard I think that native speakers are generally more reliable than teachers. Good Teachers can make mistakes and even native speakers don't know everything. For instance British people don't know all the American ways of saying things.I would like teachers to be reliable otherwise on whom could we count?
Languages are also evolving.
I now know perfectly that "To propose" means "Proposer" but I will always feel that I make a mistake if I don't use "to suggest" strange isn't it ?
I really don't remember who gave me that piece of advice

Yes for sure.
However we don't have the choice due to rules/laws in the French education system.

> Coulda, woulda, shoulda. . . learned how to use contractions.
I find this dodgy, do you?
Why "learned"?
Isn't it the imperative tense?
Is it a typo?
> The exception is will not, which becomes won’t.
I'm surprised not to find shall not -> shan't do I make up this thingie?
