Re: American English at State
Has something ever "dawned on you" that others thought was obvious? #AmericanEnglish
I can't believe it!!
For me, "to go down on someone" is a sexual thing
(I know here it is "dawn on someone" but it's weird, isn't it?
~~ edit
I just checked and I'm right: "to go down to someone" exists in the sexual realm...
... necessary to have a good pronunciation LOL

According to the Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary, “down on someone/something” also exists -in American- with a "normal" meaning:
feeling angry or disappointed with someone or something:
Dad’s down on me since I scraped the car backing out of the garage.

We're going to start a new series: infinitives! As you can see in this graphic, it's important to be on time in U.S. culture. How about in yours? What's important to do in your culture? #AmericanEnglish

Gérard I suppose that in that context "to dawn" is "to occur".gerardM a écrit:Has something ever "dawned on you" that others thought was obvious? #AmericanEnglish

Muriel, "to dawn on someone" means to become apparent, to suddenly realize, to suddenly understand...MurielB a écrit:...
Gérard I suppose that in that context "to dawn" is "to occur".
But what I wrote is: be careful with the pronunciation as there're a few other close different meanings.

Re: American English at State
Do you ever "draw a blank" when you're trying to remember a new word in #AmericanEnglish? Sometimes it can be difficult to remember new vocabulary. How do you keep track of new words so that you don't "draw a blank"?
