I recently posted something about the trends of the English language and among them was the continous form which is more frequent... otherwise I'm unable to answer your question more accurately.

Re: Interesting idioms
Gérard, thanks a lot. I remember your trend about the continuous form. When I was young I learnt that the continuous form was impossible with certain verbs : verbs that you cannot see somebody doing so I was a bit confused
Non-continuous Verbs
Non-continuous verbs; verbs that cannot be used in continuous forms are usually verbs that you cannot see somebody doing. These verbs are rarely used in continuous forms. They are:
Abstract verbs Be, want, cost, need, care, contain, owe, exist etc.
Possession verbs Own, belong, possess etc.
Emotion Verbs Like, love, hate, dislike, fear, envy etc.;
She needs help. Not She is needing help.
He wants a break. Not He is wanting a break.

Thank you Muriel. That rings a bell
> I learnt
Muriel, in your postings, we can guess -most of the time- you are influenced by American... "learnt" is British

Re: Interesting idioms
What I mean Muriel is that at your level, you must have a "clear" language: American or British but avoid a mixture of this and that... not easy.
So: "Ilearned", "I burned", color, canceled, etc.

Re: Interesting idioms
Thanks for the advice Gérard, I will do my best ! The problem is that I have learned British English and on the internet there are a lot of things written in Am. I never know what is Am and what is English.

Re: Interesting idioms
You are right: it's difficult especially when you constantly have to hear Australian (=mainly British) English.MurielB a écrit:Thanks for the advice Gérard, I will do my best ! You also have to know that the trend among Bitish youngsters is toward American English due to films, Internet and fashion... but Bristish oldies are furious.
I had an argument with British teachers:
- I was telling them that in American, they used a conditional in an if-clause
- they told me it was absolutely forbidden and impossible
- I told them that American teachers were doing so
- the response was that they should go back to school
- etc. unfortunately Americans were still sleeping when I was having this discussion and they couldn't confirm.

Gérard You posted several posts about American vocabulary vs British ones (Before reading that link I would have written "you have posted")
Here is a good link about American grammar vs British one.

Re: Interesting idioms
Hi Muriel,
More than a decade ago, I found a very long discussion on an Interent forum addressing American/British differences: it was about 1,000 pages long and I read them all (day after day, on the train leading to my office) in the beginning it was exactly in the subject Am/Br but then it shifted to regional differences inside UK; it was very interesting to read things I wouldn't have even guessed such as "tea" which is evening meal in some regions.
The discussion lasted for several years.

Verbs + Prepositions
FLUENTLAND.COM
I often post on the subject of prepositions... that's because it's important, because it's difficult (there's quite no logic with prepositions in any language) and you must get the good music in your ears with rehearsals/repetitions.

"Think twice before acting "and "Don't miss the boat"is really what you ought to ask yourself before taking a decision.

Am I right saying the French equivalents are:
- rater le bateau
- laisser passer le train, ne pas prendre le train en marche
