"Bark up the tree" (here) means the dog is looking upwards, at the possible guy sitting on a branch and trying to escape.
~~ edit
Did you notice that "bark" was also the "skin" of a tree?
Did you notice that sometimes (in serious books) "bark" could also be a small boat (French "barque")? someone might have been to lazy to translate corrrectly

Re: Interesting idioms
thanks Gérard. I was confused and I thought that "to bark up "meant to remove a tree skin with intensity.

Re: Interesting idioms
Hi Muriel,
These postings can have several uses:
- learn new words
- get confirmation of what we know
- have the opportunity to classify, to sort words, to better see differences, to compare, etc.
- even when we know a word, we get an example of the use: remember "do, make, take, get, have..."
Also, let's not confuse between phrasal verbs (with their postpositions) and verbs with their prepositions.

Re: Interesting idioms
> the more we learn the more we know
I am very careful with "learn". The important is the method, how we learn. As I wrote it several times here, I am not a big fan of tough methods: rarely learn by heart but learn little by little, when we realize the unkown point comes again and again.
Learning a language is a very long term exercise; we must not hurry up because we need to keep faith and courage.
We all know foreigner who could never learn properly even after decades.
We must be careful about "bad learning" eg speak poor English (Franglais) or mainly speak with non-EMTs (speak with other French people, speak English with Italians, Arabs, etc. even in a business environment); that's not English: there're traps and learn English badly is going backwards, slowing down training.

Hi Gérard !
I would like to add that in American English collective nouns are always followed by a singular verb whereas in British Englais it is either a plural or a singular verb.

In French, even "un groupe de 3 millions de personnes est..." is singular.
