You are right, Gérard this idiom is primarily North American its origins are impossible to trace, that expression is most used in rural areas in northern Louisiana and may have arisen from the stereotypical racist depiction of the African American as perspiring and unbathed.

Thanks Gérard for the list. Phrasal verbs are very important in everyday spoken and informal written language.I personally know that If I don't use them and rather use a more formal synonym, I run the risk of sounding pompous or ridiculous to native speakers. 450 is a long list but it's worth the while. What about you visitors ? Do you know them all ?
