Pretend to be fluent? Then you have to know these words as they are just around us quite every day, right?
NB:
- "pipe" in pipewrench has nothing to do with the. French "pipe", but Fr "tube"; this model of wrench is effectively used by plumbers or say to deal with pipes.
- I'm sorry but a bolt is a screw + a nut.
- True that a "tape measure" is the object in the picture, not a
- no mistake, the spelling is well "mallet" for our Fr "maillet"
- no need to exactly know the exact technical words but let's use wrench, pliers, saw... properly provided you can describe the use (English people don't know better than the French).
- I didn't know "corkscrew"... I'm saying "cork remover" but I don't find it in my dictionary... and my friends don't correct me .
~~~ edit
Regarding the last point, "cork remover" is understood.
However it appears that oodles of words/expressions are in use: bottle opener, cork puller, Wine Bottle Opener, Corkscrew Wine Opener, corl pops, cork popper... Amazon knows all of them.
Gérard I agree that the single biggest problem in sexist language is the generic masculine pronoun, that's the reason why I wrote the same expression with "woman". "Person" or "they" are the solution to that problem.
